Understanding Your Sleep Cycles

By Restful Dreams
Have you ever slept for eight hours but still woken up feeling tired?
You're not alone.
The quality of your sleep can be just as important as the number of hours you spend in bed. One reason is that our sleep naturally moves through repeating cycles throughout the night.
What Is a Sleep Cycle?
While you sleep, your body moves through different stages of rest. Together, these stages form one sleep cycle, which lasts around 90 minutes. Most people experience four to six cycles during a typical night's sleep.
Each stage plays an important role in helping your body and mind recover.
Light Sleep
Your body begins to relax, your breathing slows, and you're gently preparing for deeper sleep.
Deep Sleep
This is the stage where your body does much of its physical restoration. It's an important time for recovery, healing, and supporting your immune system.
REM Sleep
During REM sleep, your brain becomes more active. This is when most dreaming happens, and it's thought to play an important role in learning, memory, and emotional well-being.
Why Sleep Cycles Matter
Sometimes it's not just how long you sleep that affects how rested you feel.
Waking up during deep sleep may leave you feeling groggy, while waking naturally during lighter sleep can make getting out of bed feel a little easier.
Everyone's sleep is different, but understanding these natural cycles can help you become more aware of your own sleep patterns.
A Gentle Tip
If you'd like to experiment, try aiming for a consistent bedtime and wake-up time each day. Many people also find it helpful to use a sleep cycle calculator to estimate when to go to bed based on their preferred wake-up time.
Remember, good sleep isn't about being perfect. Small, consistent habits often make the biggest difference over time.
Take a few restful moments for yourself today. Small changes, practiced consistently, can gently support better sleep over time.
Sleep Well. Live Well.
